For most of
us, purchasing a home will require a mortgage. To obtain a mortgage, the
lender will "run" a credit report to determine our credit "worthiness".
Generally, the better our credit "worthiness", the lower our interest rate
will be for the loan.
Anyone who has ever had a bank account, a mortgage, a credit card, a car
loan, an account with a retail store etc. will almost definitely have a
credit rating. Most information in your credit rating comes from companies
you have credit with, such as the banks, department stores, finance
companies, etc. as well as from certain public records such as lawsuits, tax
liens, judgments and bankruptcies.
Credit is much more than a piece of plastic. A credit report is an essential
document for the savvy consumer. It is a summary of a consumer's credit
activity and we believe it is vitally important for consumers to know what's
going on in their good name. This is particularly true with the growth of
identity theft.
Mistakes or outdated information on a credit report may affect your ability
to get credit. More serious problems on a credit report, such as
unauthorized credit cards or loans, could be signs of identity theft.
Identity thieves have victimized an estimated 10 million people over the
past year, and cost these individuals $5 billion.
If you have been denied credit, insurance, a job, or rental dwelling
opportunity because of information contained in your credit report, you are
entitled to a complimentary copy of your report within 60 days. If after
checking you believe the information to be incorrect you may file a brief
statement explaining why. Inaccurate information on your credit may be
removed, but no one can have accurate, current or verifiable information
removed from his/her record.

consumers had to pay to learn about themselves. A new federal law now makes

free credit file disclosure, commonly called a credit report, once every 12
months from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies:
Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Warning: Have information about your credit accounts available. Each of the
companies ask several questions to assure you are who you say you are before
they allow you to have the report.
